Science - from Generalization to Specialization
We split our civilizational timeline into five periods -
Pre-1650 or before the end of the foundational war (-1650),
Between the foundational war and WWI (1650-1815),
Between WWI to civilizational peak (1815-1860),
Between civilizational peak to WWII (1860-1945),
Post WWII (1945-).
In science, these see progressive increase from generalization to specialization. The early periods were dominated by the polymaths (Descartes, Newton, Euler, Gauss, etc), who contributed significantly to many branches of science.
Specializations started to increase after the peak, and in early 1900s, the theoretical physicists and mathematicians moved to separate buildings. Then electrical engineers moved out of the physics department.
Fast forward to the post-WWII era, and you find new branches of “science” being created almost every week. There is no shortage of specialists in this brave new world of Science (TM).
